Take Time to Organize Your Work and Life Reclaim the Loving Time with Your Family
You didn’t have a second to even think this week. Running here and there. Work. Home. And helping your aging relative. You know you should take some time to regroup, but it’s like there isn’t a minute to spare. Reality is, it gets worse from here long before it gets better. So, yes, you need to take the time to organize your work and life. That way you can reclaim the loving time with your family, and save yourself from caregiver burnout.
Take control of your time, and beware the limitations of a traditional reactive mindset.
A Planned Doctor’s Appointment
Imagine this. You go with your family member to the doctor. Your responsibilities and boundaries are clear, and you have a plan for success. The Enduring Power of Attorney is prepared. Moreover, a log of medications and previous health history is with you. Probably saved right on your phone. The contacts for insurance, required cards, and emergency contacts- with phone numbers- are all right at hand.
As it should be. And perhaps you have managed this aspect of your relative’s care so you are this organized for doctor’s appointments. But, what about everything else?
Set Aside A Time to Plan
Take an hour. Just one. And look at your entire situation. See how the caregiving role you play fits with everything else. Write out your routine tasks. Make a list of special projects. Create a schedule. Step aside from the daily rush, long enough to see the big picture. It may not even take an hour but schedule it anyway. You might get a 20-minute nap in, too. You’ll be glad you did.
Once you have the routine tasks, special projects and an overall picture for your role, look at everything again based on the 4 D’s of the organization as outlined below.
The 4 D’s of Organization
The 4 D’s of the organization is not new. They are, however, revolutionary. Every day, every employee caregiver can use the 4 D’s of Organization to streamline their lives and de-stress through better organization. Use these at work, at home and to be more efficient as a caregiver. This is gold!
The 4 D’s are Delete, Delay, Delegate and Do
Delete
The best way to get more time and be more organized is to stop doing things that aren’t really important. There are many things that, left undone, would make no difference at all to anyone. Some are done out of duty. Some are done out of habit. Once you figure out what can be deleted, just don’t do them. Take them off the list and out of your head.
Delay
Sometimes delaying something until later gives you more time now and doesn’t create a crunch later. Some things seem more important or urgent than they really are until you think about what really needs to be done. The best is when you can delay something until it can be deleted! Also, Such a gift!
Delegate
There are some caregiving activities that can be delegated, and others just can’t be. Think carefully about that. What can you delegate, and to whom? Other family members? Professional help? Having groceries delivered after you order them online is an example of delegating a task that otherwise is time-consuming. Be open to possibilities. Trying to do everything doesn’t work.
Do
The first principle for Do is that anything that can be done in 5 minutes or less, right now, should just be done. Otherwise, once a task has gone through the scrutiny of the other 3 D’s, it is now on the actual To Do List. Consider scheduling blocks of time for certain types of activities.
Once you look at your list and apply the 4 D’s, remember you still have more resources available.
